1. What is one of the biggest misconceptions people have about individuals living with chronic illness?
If you can go out with friends, you're not chronically Ill.
2. Describe a significant way your daily life or routine has been impacted by a chronic illness.
It gets in the way of chores. It can be months until I can vacuum for example.
3. What are some of the invisible challenges that people with chronic illnesses often face?
Pain that is not expressed the same way normal people express it, we can be in a lot of pain and appear to be fine. But it can severely limit our ability to do normal tasks, or make the tasks dangerous.
4. How has living with a chronic illness changed your perspective on life or your priorities?
I used to think I'd be able to do a lot of things in life, now my objective is to just keep functioning On my own. My goals have drastically changed.
5. What role has support (from family, friends, support groups, etc.) played in your journey with chronic illness?
If it was not for the deep understanding and encouragement of friends I'd probably not be alive. They keep me strong and motivate me to keep strong.
6. What is one piece of advice you would give to someone newly diagnosed with a chronic illness?
Research it as best you can. Information is power. You will need it to adjust how you live properly.
7. In what ways do you advocate for yourself or others living with chronic illnesses?
Make sure medical professionals understand your limits and the care you need. Make sure if you need help doing procedures you get it.
8. What are some of the emotional or mental health challenges that can accompany chronic illness?
Frustration is common when you can't get things done. Anger can happen at any time because you lose patients with people you need to deal with.
9. How do you manage the uncertainty that can come with living with a chronic illness?
Make sure people know I can change my mind on plans or that I may have to be taken home quickly. Plan for the fact things can change very fast.
10. What is one thing you wish more people understood about chronic illness?
We are not lazy and if we could, we would be working. When you can't plan on the ability to get tasks done, you just can't work anymore. People see you walking in the park and think you should have a job of some kind.
