The Wonder (2022) A Review

This movie is set in the Irish mid-lands in 1862. It is the story of a nurse who is hired to watch a child who is claimed to have not eaten for 4 months. The people of the village see this as a miracle from God. It is also the story of the 9-year-old girl who is at the center of this religious act. It becomes evident that trickery is in play before the watch starts.

You notice rather soon that the nurse has lost a baby and is addicted to opium. This plays in later in the movie as to what happens. As the nurse watches the girl literally starving to death because her supply of food is cut off and she remains determined to keep up the illusion of a miracle for some reason.

There enters a love interest for the nurse that is at first in the background but at the end comes to the foreground. There is also a nun that plays a rather minor roll in the movies, who is also watching the child.

The comity that sends for the nurse is full on willing to let the child die in the name of religious fervor. In the end there is a fire that devastates the cottage the child was living in and leaves the nurse burned on her hands. The council in part thinks it should be made a shrine for people to visit as they, in part, are deep in the religious aspects of this fake miracle.

In the end this is a heart-warming change to the situation for the nurse, the man she fell in love with and another person.

This is not only a tale of how the nurse and the child changed each other’s lives, and the love the nurse has for a child she is tasked to “watch”, but a transformation of the spirit and of the mind.

IMDB has this at 6.6/10 and I gave it an 8/10. This is a truly amazing movie. It made me rather emotional several times and the ending sent me over the top. This being said, this movie is as far from a Hollywood movie as you can get. It is not a blockbuster action film; it is an artistic statement on the rational VS the religious. In the scene with the fire you see a bible burning signifying the destruction of religion for the rational way of thinking. If you are only a fan of glitz and high drama, this is not the movie for you.
