A Month of Blogs Day 12 (Favourite TV Series)

Most of my life, my favorite TV show has been Doctor Who. From childhood to this day, I've been a very big fan of the show. It has changed a lot over the years in many ways, and I have been there enjoying them all.

Classic Doctor Who (1963-1989) had 695 episodes, some of witch where lost, and some of them the rights to air the shows have been withdrawn by the fellow who owns the rights (if you ask me, his reasoning is a bit nuts). This era, the show had a very low budget, and a lot of the props where literally constructed from garbage that had been salvaged. For several seasons the TARDIS (a ship that flies in time and space) did not exist and the Doctor did not time travel. Originally the Doctor had a grand daughter with him (she was referenced in the Disney series). Most of the TARDIS inside shots where done in a factory complex in the UK, thus looking very industrial. That is to say, other than the control room and a couple other rooms. The control room changed with new doctors over the years as well. In this era, the TARDIS was not referred to as a living thing, but as a machine. The idea of regeneration into a different body with the same memories and knowledge came when the original actor became too ill to continue filming and needed to be replaced. This became a trend to renew the show over the years with a new Doctor who did things in a different way and had a different look to him. I find it interesting that there was clothing of a female type and some extremely flamboyant clothing in the close closet in the original series when the doctor went in there the one time, as there would have been a backlash if the Doctor was a woman or gay at that time. In this era, there where also other time lords running around, and an entire planet of them. In one season the Doctor went on trial for interfering with the evolution of planets, and faced the idea of being erased from time.

Modern Doctor Who (2005-2022) 175 Episodes where released. This was a more big budget series with better effects to say the least, although at times, not up to industry standard. In the originals the ultimate nemesis, the DALECKS could not go up stairs - but in the first encounter in this updated version, they could fly. This doctor was all over the place in his/her regenerations - ranging from a guy your not sure of the sexuality of, to a guy who was not afraid to kill (something older Doctors would not think of most of the time). The idea of a woman Doctor pissed off a lot of people it seems, but the fan base mostly stayed with the show. There was a reference to a future renegade Doctor who was a black woman and who was hiding from authorities for some reason, and I wish they would go there in a short run special of 3 episodes. There also was hints of the Doctor being romantic with Captain Jack (a man) - in the spinoff  Torchwood, there was again reference to this romance, but never any conformation. We also faced "the War Doctor", a version of the Doctor not even spoken of by the other Doctors. This was the darkest the show ever went and hinted of a hellish war on the home world that killed billions - it also showed that not everyone on the home world was a timelord for the first time. The entire planet was banished into a different dimension by the Doctor, and when it came back the entire world was killed off by The Master (the once friend but now ultimate enemy of the Doctor). There was a marked loss of fans in the lase few seasons of this incarnation of the show.

Disney Doctor Who (2023-Present) 8 episodes as of the time of this blog post. A lot of people stressed out over Disney taking over the show to say the least. I for one was wondering how this was going to go. I have to say, this was the best season of the entire history of Doctor Who in my mind. Every episode got me feeling like I did when I was a little kid watching the show on Sunday on TV. It was to say the least incredible. The writing was amazing, the acting was amazing and the effects where outstanding. The idea that the Doctor was attracted to a man sexually was also very much touched on when he almost kissed a guy. There was very much a hint that the attraction was real. This was the first ever overt look at an actual possible sex life for the doctor or romantic interests at least. The first season was an arc and worked like a dream. This Doctor is way more dynamic and has way more depth to him than any other incarnation before. As well, there was a reference in the classic episodes of a side regeneration where a timelord splits into two people. They literally do this in the first episodes of this new version of the show - this leaves it open for an appearance of the previous Doctor at some time. I'm very much looking forward to the next season. To me the magic is back and I'm loving it.
