A Bourbon Flight
So late this afternoon I went
to the bar with a friend and had a Bourbon Flight. This is the result, I
managed to record what I was tasting then looked up the mash bill for the 4 I
had a go at. I came home and transposed what I had recorded on voice recorder –
Had to put on the ear phones as the music was a bit much in there. Could not do
a video because of the music. And all this with a thobing headache. But here it
is:
* Buffalo Trace
Mash bill: 90% Corn, 18% Rye,
10% Malted Barley
ABV: 45%
Look: Light brown with hints
of red and gold
Smell: caramel, citrus peels,
honey, cinnamon, brown sugar, marzipan, oak and corn
Taste: caramel followed by
hints of toffee, burnt sugar, honey, cinnamon and pepper
After Taste: dark fruit and,
again, subdued vanilla
Finish: Woody, caramel.
* Old Grand-Dad
Mash bill: 63% Corn, 27% Rye,
10% Malted Barley
ABV: 50%
Look: Copper colored
Smell: caramel and
butterscotch, vanilla, caramelized fruit, spice, oak and raw grain.
Taste: Caramel, oak, spice
and vanilla.
After Taste: light notes of
white pepper and leather
Finish: Long finish of
caramel, oak, spice, vanilla and grain.
* Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve
Mash bill: 77% Corn, 13% Rye,
10% Malted Barley
ABV: 60%
Look: Leather brown with
hints of red.
Smell: Corn, buttered
biscuits and caramel, dried dark fruit, vanilla and a light bit of butterscotch
and wood
Taste: dark fruit, toasted
grain, wood, brown sugar, corn and spice.
After Taste: caramel, Crème
brûlée
Finish: Woody with notes of
caramel, spice, corn and red licorice (Wood taste lingered the longest)
* Angels Envy
Mash bill: 28% Corn, 45% Rye,
27% Malted Barley
ABV: 43.3%
Look: Butterscotch
Smell: wine, corn, malty
sweetness, spice and candied citrus, cocoa, dried fruit
Taste: bourbon and grapy wine, corn, dried dark
fruit, caramel, rye-like spice and vanilla taffy.
After Taste: wood, chocolate
covered cherries
Finish: Corn, spice, grape
fruit, leather
You have quite a developed, palate!
